Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in the spring of 2001, when I was going through a very difficult time in my marriage and in my life. The song was birthed in pain, but is full of hope. The idea for the story, the melody, and most of the lyrics came while I was on an afternoon walk. I carried a small notepad with me and jotted down the lyrics as I went, and had two of the verses already by the time I got home. I finished the rest by the end of the afternoon, although some adjustments were made in the following months.
This was the first song I ever recorded. The version here is the second recording I did of it. My hope is that everyone who hears this song can be encouraged by it, and gain hope in true love.
Lyrics
Deep in the woods, in a cabin called Lonely
A young lady lives, far away from the city life
Walks through the days, making friends with the trees,
Singing songs with the birds ‘til the coming of night
Then alone to her cell of four walls and a window
A table and chair, and a dim reading light
In a small dresser drawer was a gown that she’d never worn
Hidden ‘til one day she’d be someone’s bride
Someday I’ll wear it, she says with a little smile
Someday I’ll wear it and look like a queen
And someday a king will come ride up beside me
A king who will take me away from this cabin called Lonely
One day she thought she would take her dress out
Just to see if it still matched the colour of her eyes
She went to the dresser, pulled out the drawer,
And let out a gasp as she saw inside
For a musty scent passed through the walls of the dresser
And dust had invaded the soft silken folds
She took it away to the edge of the river
To wash out the stains and then to bring it back home
The dress must be perfect, she said with a sad smile
Or no one will think that I look like a queen
And I want a king who will ride up beside me
A king who will take me away from this cabin called Lonely
She took off her shoes on the rocks of the bank
And then waded knee-deep in the swift-flowing stream
And as she was washing the dust from her dress
A man rode behind her on a golden-brown steed
Who are you? I’m the one who lives deep in the woods
All alone? I am friends with the trees
What are you washing? The dress for my wedding day
Who’ll be the groom? I won’t know ‘til he asks me
May I help with your task? I am fine, but I thank you
Then when you are done may I give you a ride?
He took her up onto his horse and they rode away
Back to the cabin, and as he waved good-bye she sang
Maybe one day I’ll wear this dress for him
And maybe he’ll tell me I look like a queen
And is he the king who will ride up beside me
The king who will take me away from this cabin called Lonely
Many days passed, he visited always
And one day he asked her if she’d be his bride
They went to the little church, made all their promises
And she wore her dress for the very first time
Then back at the cabin, as evening was falling
He untied her dress, it fell to the floor
She reached for the darkness to cover her shame
And knew that she couldn’t wear that dress anymore
Come let me dance with you, he said to his new bride
Don’t you know that you look like a queen?
And I am the king who has come alongside you
Together we’ll change the name of this cabin called Lonely
