    Story Behind the Song
This song was written all at once very late at night in the fall of 2001. Subsequently 2 finished versions have been recorded, the one for the 2002 GFU Campus Album and this version, finished in January 2003.

    Lyrics
Jessica left for the moon yesterday
It was not what she thought it would be
Instead of a place where the bad went away
It reminded her of all the things that her daddy said

Jessica left for the moon yesterday
‘Cause she needed a place she could breathe
But instead of an atmosphere free of decay
It was cold empty lake houses smelling of vacuums

Look, Momma’s in pearls and she’s making us dinner
While Papa’s away at another late meeting

    Don’t tell me you know
    This isn’t Baker Street
    This isn’t Hollywood
    This isn’t silver screen
    Tell me you know
    This isn’t family
This isn’t where we belong anymore

Jessica left for the moon yesterday
And she’s selling her clothes to the poor
And anything else that reminds her of home
And the smells that she felt as she walked in that kitchen door

Momma’s in pearls and she’s getting the pies out
While Papa is mixing another martini

    Don’t tell me you know
    This isn’t Baker Street
    This isn’t Hollywood
    This isn’t silver screen
    Tell me you know
    This isn’t family
This isn’t where we belong anymore

Back at the moon, Jessica’s looking
    For something like food
    Something to change the
    Consistently hollow
    And pit-like consistency
    Of her inflection
“And all that they took from me!”

Sure, Papa’s out late and Momma’s a fruitcake
But can you rebut that it’s they who made you this way?
Keep up the tirade and wait till your back breaks in
Two little pieces, they’ll look at them shaking their heads
“She was so small for her hate.”
“She could have been so great, if she only got therapy.”

Jessica left for the moon yesterday
It was not what she thought she would see
Instead of what she wanted taken away
She recalls all the faults gently pointing back to herself

Momma and Papa are looking at counseling
While you’re still looking at men like they’re gasoline
Fires you can’t touch cause they’ll give you a headache
And steal at your soul even though everybody knows better
