Story Behind the Song
This song was written, as was "Song For Everybody", in reaction to the government's post 9-11 crackdown. I'm not saying they are trying to hurt innocent Americans, and I'm glad they are being vigilant against terrorism at home, but I am very concerned that certain elements of the Patriot Act venture too closely toward the unconstitutional (i.e. searches with blanket warrants instead of having to justify and re-justify their reasons to different court juridstictions, holding people for very long periods of time without charging them). I want to be safe and I want to see terrorists stopped, and those who plan the acts jailed before they successfully carry them out, but I don't feel that any of the rights granted to us pose such a danger that we should relinquish them. I'm all in favor of paying more taxes to put more agents and cops on the case of terrorists, as well as D.A.s or whatever, if that's what it takes.
Lyrics
Oh, please
The idea that the G men will keep me safe
How could we all be so stupid
We will surely live
It's one thing to want to be free
From those desirous of destruction
But, come on,
Lest we forget, they don't own us yet
Listen we've learned this lesson
Watching committees
In the dark and in the car park
Surely you remember
It's one thing to want to be free
From those desirous of destruction
But, come on,
Lest we forget, they don't own us yet
The monarch waved from the chopper
Look it's the president
He had to go
He wrote a memoir
We felt our way through it
It's one thing to want to be free
From those desirous of destruction
But, come on,
Lest we forget, they don't own us yet
