Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in 1995. The riff at the beginning came first and then I filled out the chord progression. I wrote the lyrics during a typical crisis of faith. The lyrics are sort of like a list of problems followed by the answer I propose to each. This song is really fun to play and I always find it very affirming. The original recording took a long time to finish as I was writing it as I recorded it. This new recording wasn't too tricky to record, but it took me several days to get the mix right.
Lyrics
Gonna' have a rave-up
People hang on, hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
The cops may be out but being naughty is in
Hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
Oh, God, I feel this awful pain
Is it you I'll need to hang on to?
Each day I feel I'm crying in vain
You're the one I'll need to hang on to
Bowie told us that it wasn't a game
So hang on, hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
They're scant words of wisdom,
But the people they love to hang on, hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
Oh, God, my hair's a little too long
Like a worn out old song, I'll hang on
I feel it must be wrong
Somehow I just gotta' hang on
The season is gone for seeking reason and Time, so hang on, hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
Singing sweetly tonight and the music's Alright, hang on
Gotta' hang on to it
Oh, God, I feel this awful pain
Is it you I'll need to hang on to?
In my room, in the crowd, out in the light
You're the one I'll need to hang on to
