Story Behind the Song
The idea for this composition came to mind after I saw a fish commercial where this wise, old, tough captain asks a little naïve boy "Have you ever been sto sea Billy?" I took it all in another directions and made this boy represent the changing times. It's amazing how easily some people can have so little appreciation for another person's live, simply by knowing nothing about it and believing that he or shi is obsolete. The little boy in the commrecial is innocent, but he could become a young arrogant executive someday, and decide the good old captain's fate.
Lyrics
Have you ever been to sea, Billy?
Sometimes the waves get so high, you can't even eat your food
Have you ever been lonely and bored, Billy?
Sitting around for days on end listening to your hair grow
And the sounds of your mind going round and round
Have you ever had re-occurring dreams, Billy?
Looking for the only wise man who can tell you
Why we go through life just to suffer, struggle, and die
And when you finally find him, he replies "Why not?"
Have you ever had bad experiences in school, Billy?
Like having a physical defect, and everyone is laughing at you
You get to twitching so much that you have to get someone to help you
Carry your coffee across the school cafeteria
Yea Billy, have you ever been to sea?
Have you ever been to sea, Billy?
Do you know what I mean, Billy?
You look a little green, Billy!
People like you have made people like me
have you ever had your career taken away from you Billy?
It's like the only thing you love and the only thing you ever wanted to do
It's drifting away in a world of ever-changing products
It's like someone took a large knife and cut your heart out Billy
I don't need anyone to help me hurt myself Billy
I can make my own noose
Besides, they do shoot horses don't they Billy?
Hey Billy, while you are here why don't you help me with something
Here, kick my ass, Billy, do it again, Billy
Kick it one more time, Billy
Then again, you wouldn't really know what I was talking about
Would you Billy?
