this is the Hunter-Garcia classic. It starts with a vamp, then a vocal, uptempo section, followed by a bridge, with a swift return to the original melody. From there it goes into a jam, which takes a surprising turn before easing back in to the bridge for a closing.

    Story Behind the Song
It took me a long time to like this song. I was always attracted to its raw energy, but I used to fault it for not being very cosmic. I have come to appreciate it as being cosmically uncosmic--an expression of the great discontented yelp of the working class, the inevitable dissatisfaction of the unredeemed human state.

    Lyrics
I been ballin' a shiny black steel jackhammer
been chippin' up rocks on the Great Highway
I'll live five years if I take my time
Ballin' that jack and drinkin' my wine
    Yes I will

I been chippin' them rocks from dawn till doom
while my rider hide my bottle in the other room
    Yes she do
Doctor say I better stop ballin' that jack
If I live five years I''m gonna bust my back
    yes I will

    Cause there's an Easy Wind
    Cross the bayou today
And there's a whole lot of women, mama.
Out in red on the street today
    And the river keeps a-tallkin'
but you never heard a word it said

Gotta find a woman be good to me
won't hide my likker try and serve me tea
    no she won't
'cause I'm a stone-jack baller and my heart is true
and I'll give everything that I got to you
    yes I will
