Story Behind the Song
THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN FOR MY FATHER AFTER OUR STEPMOTHER LOST A YEAR LONG DRAWN OUT BATTLE WITH LUNG CANCER IN FEBRUARY OF 2002. IT WAS WRITTEN 4 MONTHS AFTER THE FUNERAL AND TO THIS DAY CHOKES ME UP WHEN I PERFORM IT. THE SONG WAS WRITTEN IN 10 MINUTES AND FEELINGS OF SADNESS AND REGRET POURED FROM MY SOUL.ALL TAKES WERE 1 TAKE TO KEEP THE RAW, POWERFUL FEEL THAT THE SONG HAS GIVEN ITS LISTENERS.
Lyrics
I WANDER OUTSIDE AND PONDER THE DAY, I CAME BACK FROM THE FUNERAL FEELING DISMAY, I WALK OFF ALONE, I'VE GOT NO PLACE TO GO, THE HOUSE IS SO EMPTY WITHOUT YOU AT HOME.
WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW, NO REASON TO WAKE, 17 YEARS, THAT JUST CAN'T BE REPLACED, WE HAD SO MANY PLANS, NOW THAT'S TAKEN AWAY, I GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY SAY LIVE YOUR DAYS 1 BY ONE.
BUT I TRY TO GET BY THE BEST THAT I CAN.
I WANT YOU TO KNOW, I DIDN'T SAY IT ENOUGH, YOU WERE MY BEST FRIEND, PROMISE ME THAT YOU'LL BE THERE, SO WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR ME TO GO, I HOPE YOU'LL BE THERE, WAITING TO HOLD ME, THAT'S ALL THAT I CARE.
