This song is a Buddhist qwawali song, based on a piano drone. The verses describe a vision I had , and the chorus is an invocation of Amithaba, the Buddha of transformation. Synthesized strings and harmonium, and a real saxophone, add color to the arrangement.
Credits: words and music by Martin Holsinger

    Story Behind the Song
The song records a vision I frequently have while walking in my town--seeing the place as it has been and as it could be. It is a prayer to Buddha Amithaba to help us transform into kinder, more intelligent beings, just as we have been transformed through the ages into the beings we are now.

It took me about a week to record this. I am not totally happy with it, because the lead vocal is a bit low, but it will have to do for now.

    Lyrics
I was walking in my town
    On a lovely summer day
    Cars were cruisin’ all around
Homes of wood and brick and stone

And then I saw an Indian
Hunting bow stretched in his hands
    Taking aim at a buffalo
    Grazing in the forest deep
Next moment walked at glacier’s edge
Then left footprints on the beach
Next breath I swam in open sea
    Then through swamp dodged dinosaur
And then I strode o’er dry, bare land
Til’ rocks melted beneath my feet
Feet then flailed in empty space
I blinked, and found familiar street

    OM AMI DEWA RHI…….

As I was walking in my town
I thought about my grocery list
I thought about the ones I love
Who I would and wouldn’t kiss
I thought about what joins us all
The mysteries of death and birth
I thought of glimpses I have had
Of why I came down to this earth
    My heart opened with gratitude
To all of those who’ve gone before
I made a promise to myself
To leave this world a better place
    Then I remembered margerine

    OM AMI DEWA RHI

I was walking in my town
    Greed and ignorance all around
I saw the future they’d create
Sun beat down on cracked concrete
    Abandoned houses, burned out cars
Grass and trees all dry and dying
I saw no squirrels, I heard no birds
Just the rat and the cockaroach
Then the sun exploded in the sky
Bye-bye used up world, bye bye

    Then I saw another way
    On that pleasant summer day
Saw the path of love and caring
Saw the path of bliss and sharing
Gone city smells, gone city sounds
    Homes and gardens scattered ‘round
Clear running streams and leafy groves
A human race of loving friends
A sweet, green planet ‘till the end
When, of course, the sun explodes

There are two paths we can take
What choice do we daily make?

    OM AMI DEWA RHI….
