Story Behind the Song
One of my oldest and dearest friends died of brain cancer a few years back. He was so full of life and joy. He lived for the Grateful Dead, and would have been devastated by Jerry's death, but he died before that tragic event.
I find it hard to accept that someone my age could die so young, so I put I put my friend Tommy up there in heaven with Jerry, saving seats at a show for all his friends.
Lyrics
Tom Simons, I'll say his name again
Tom Simons, Tom Simons
The Grateful Dead have left the stage
My Tommy loved them best
He died the same year Jerry did
And now his soul can rest
He had his own way of walking and talking
That boy could fill a room
A light went on when I saw his face
He left this world too soon
(Chorus)
He was a New York Boy/from Jamaica Queens
And he discovered California when the Grateful Dead
played at the Coliseum
He went to every show/seven days in a row
He really loved that band/he was their biggest fan
I'll miss him so
The Grateful Dead have left the stage
Garcia said goodbye
He's up there playing all of his riffs
In that great hall in the sky
And Tommy's sitting in the very first row
He's bootlegging every note
Saving seats for all of his friends
So we can have another toke
Chorus
