Story Behind the Song
Charlie was listening to some Hmong music that had kind of a droning odd-
meter pattern that he really dug. He put it on his 4-track and brought it to
band practice with the intention of creating a kind of mellow, artsy sort of
song. Then Lila screwed things up by coming up with a heavy guitar riff
over Charlie's 5/8 Hmong groove that became the verse. Charlie added a
Rush-influenced chorus. Kent wasn't grooving on the drum part in the
verse, so we haggled over it a bit, and put some stops in, which sounded
cool. Perry added his lyrics which reflect his experience running his
Taylor-Sound business. Kent convinced Charlie to hold back in the
guitar solo, which he is not used to doing. It worked out well. Later Rob
came to band practice and heard the song, and said: "Wow. That's a
good song." We were happy because he's hard to impress. He added
his bassline and that was that.
When we recorded the song, the guitars went first, because Kent was
out of town that week, and the recording was part of a 3-song student
project at Hennepin Tech, so there was a tight schedule as far as studio
time was concerned. First Charlie played the song to a click track. The
next week, Lila put down her guitar part. Then Kent and Rob took their
turn. It all went pretty quickly. Perry laid down the vocal tracks last
because he had a cold that just wouldn't go away. He took some cold
medication with something in it that he referred to as "effies." You can
get them over the counter.
Lyrics
If you've got a golden notion, then you'd better forgive the lotion cause you ain't getting rubbed down any time soon.
There is a price you pay directly when getting involved inside the money, especially when there's more than normal for you.
Pre-Chorus:
I want more than one man's fair share.
I want some more, give me some more.
There's never enough to be above.
Oh, and if I just had a day to meditate in.
I would stretch out like a lion.
I had to sacrifice my holy side of me that used to rule me to make advances in the world of the loot.
I feel I've got a fuckin' carrot danglin' in front of my face that never gets closer to me.
Pre-Chorus:
Chorus:
But no, instead I'll be chasing it.
I'll be chasing money.
Solo:
Pre-Chorus:
Chorus:
I would choose it over my lover's honey.
