Another divorce survivor tale. No co-dependancy here!
CD: On The Edge Of Romance   Label: King Noodle Records
Credits: Words & Music by Marc Bristol

    Story Behind the Song
The song was #2 in a trilogy of divorce songs all written in 1982. All three of them appear on the same album now, and a song written a lot later that amounts to a prequel also appears there. But there are also songs from the OTHER edge of romance - the incoming edge on the album. It was recorded in 3 or 4 takes, with the steel guitar overdubbed later by Country Dave Harmonson, who also plays lead Telecaster.

    Lyrics
    The Best Of Everything
© Marc Bristol BMI (Key of G)

Well, the judge said you could have the house
And the good car went with the place
Left me drivin’ my beat up pickup
    And rentin’ a parkin’ space
Well, the rent is high, but so am I
I’m sittin’ here having a ball
‘cause you took the best of every thing,
but you left the best thing of all

Yeah you took the best of everything
But you left the best thing of all
You can stand on top of all that you got
You still ain’t gonna look that tall
You might think you come out on top
But you’re cruisin’ for a fall
‘cause you took the best of everything
but you left the best thing of all

Well, of course you had to have all our antiques
To go with your nice new house
But this Salvation Army reject stuff
Why it’s good enough for your old spouse
You might think you’re gonna leave me here
Robbin’ Peter to pay off Paul
‘cause you took the best of everything, but you left the best thing of all
    (chorus)

You took the best pots and pans,
and plates and knives and forks of course
and even the best of the children’s toys
leavin’ behind this old rockin’ horse
You might think some new sugar daddy’s
Gonna make you feel like the queen of the ball
‘cause you took the best of everything
but you left the best thing of all
    (chorus)
