Story Behind the Song
At the battle of San Jacinto, the cries of "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" filled the air as the outnumbered Texians routed the Mexican Army. As the battle progressed and it was obvious that the Mexican Army had been defeated, Sam Houston pleaded with his men to show mercy and take prisoners. However, the Texians' memories of the massacres at the Alamo and Goliad overcame their better judgement as they proceeded to avenge their fallen comrades.
