    Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in 1967 while living in the south of France. nick Drake learned it from me and recorded it on a home demo which was later included on the album 'Time Of No Reply." I've written about my friendship with Nick and His remarkable songwriting ability in an an article for MOJO Magazine. It's posted on my web site - www.robinfrederick.com - along with other articles about Nick and songwriting.

    Lyrics
I wake up in the morning
    Look at my clock
    It's way past noontime
And i know I'm late for work
Tell me, tell me, what have I done wrong
Ain't nothin' going right for me
Must be I been smoking too long.

I go to fix me some breakfast
But I ain't got no food
Go to take me a shower
But the water don't feel no good
    Tell me, tell me ...

I got opium in my chimney
    Got the marijuana blues
Got a nightmare made of hash dreams
And the devil in my shoes
    Tell me, tell me ...

    Well, when I'm smokin'
I put my worries on a shelf
    Don't think about nothin'
    Try not to see myself
    Tell me, tell me...

Now, in these blues I'm singin'
There's a lesson to be learned
    Don't go round smokin'
    Less you wanna get burned
    Tell me, tell me
    What have I done wrong
Ain't nothin' going right for me
    Must be I been smoking
    Everything going wrong for me
    Must be I been smoking
Ain't nothin' going right for me
Must be I been smoking too long.
