Story Behind the Song
Dirts favorite Line(s): ‘the Holy Ghost has to go through your bone marrow’-(Optimus Rhyme), ‘the greater the opponent, the more impressive the flattery’-(Eps), (Roldans whole verse is worth checkin!), ‘throwing spears into the ribcage of Jesus’-(Dirt, referring to the fact that our sins are the reason why Jesus had to die)
Before I went to New York to record, I was in Cleveland Ohio with Doug (owner of ‘No Compromise Rec.’, who first owned the album). This is where GoldenChild came out to and then we all drove to NY together. We were at Doug’s pad for a couple days before leaving, and in that time GC and me had watched some movie that was sitting in the shelves (I think it was some old movie about Paul, in the bible, with Charlton Heston). We heard the flute loop you hear in this song. I forget how we snagged it but I think Golden had a mic that he attached to his sampler and took it straight from the VCR.
Any way, now we had a new beat that was festering in our brains. I loved the slow pace and overall mood of the track, so I definitely wanted to use it. I had wanted to get Remnant Militia on this new album again but had lost contact with most of them. GoldenChild knew how to get ahold of Roldan, however, and I contacted him about the track. He was down and wanted his brother to get on it too. So, in the same way we had to get 7Lock on the album, I sent him the raw tracks and he recorded locally.
The apostle Paul had wrote something that always stuck with me in Romans 7:13-25. It’s about how in each of us there is a war between good (the things you want to do) and bad (the things you always seem to end up doing). He gets pretty heavy into this war in all of us. Since the original loop was taken off of a movie about Paul, that’s the idea I sent the track away with, the 2 laws that war within. We decided to let Roldan and Optimus run with it first and then we would write when it came back (Epsilon had come out to spend a week with us too). Obviously it came back with another unbelievably dope verse from Roldan, and an added surprise from his young brother (who I had never heard before but was trusting Rol that he was ill!).
When you listen to any remnant stuff you have to love each of them in their own unique ways, but there is always something special about those crazy verses that Roldan drops! I think all the attacks on the track came out dope, but I just have to brag about Roldan militant for a sec. There is just something so potent in the way he writes. Never afraid to lay down the theology straight into the heretics faces!
Epsilon came off too. I always dig the way he just ‘talked’ his backup track. And then lastly, Optimus was an added dope addition. Only 16 at the time of recording but showing the maturity of a disciplined hiphop vocalist.
A friend of Jesse’s, Kury Spencer, added that cool bass rumble you hear in the back (you can even hear, at times, his fingers moving up and down the fret board). Golden got to actually sequence and mix the track down before he went back home to Florida.
This was not a track that got a lot of feedback because it isn’t a ‘hype’ song, but it stands out as one of my favorites for its uniqueness.
Sidenote: Optimus had a moniker at the time but he didn’t like it. In my notebook I have a few ideas for emcee names that I think are cool, and Optimus Rhyme was one of them. when I was writing all the credits I wanted to make sure he wanted to stay with his name. He wasn’t sure so I suggested the OP Rhyme name. He dug it so it stuck! It was just cool to pass a name to someone. If you are a girl and don’t understand. Optimus Prime was the leader of the Autobots on the Transformers cartoons.
