When one realizes they need a better relationship with God, how do they learn more about Him? In his inspired word (Bible). I had the same goals, also, with this one. I wanted something theologically tight, but not an audible sleeping pill. I didn’t want people to just constantly skip over this track. I remember that the words had been written for the longest time, but I had no solid ideas for the soundscape. The words alone were pretty heavy, so we needed to lighten it up with the music to make it digestible. One night in the studio while Jesse was mixing another song down, I started playing with this toddlers toy that was sitting in the studio. It was a little kiddie keyboard that you could turn on and play. It had all these preset beats that you could hit keys over, and one of them was ‘rap’. So I played it. Immediately I thought it was actually kind of cool in a ‘1980 Atari home gaming system’ kind of way. It was kind of fast though, but to the side of the keyboard were 2 buttons to adjust the tempo. I slowed it down a bit. Then, for no good reason at all, I started to rap the ‘scripture’ lyrics over it. After a couple of lines Jesse looked up at me and we both grinned. 5 minutes later we were in the larger recording room placing a mic about 2 inches from the tiny, cheap speaker of the childs toy. We didn’t loop anything. We just hit record on the sound board and let the toy play for about 5 minutes. Then Jesse tracked some drums over it to bring out the beat. I broke off my lyrics and later we added a bass and a ‘funky’ guitar riff and the track was born! We even left the noises of me turning the unit on and off, and the sounds it makes when you hit the tempo buttons. I think the end result came out pretty darn nifty!
