My buddy Thomas Butera had this great banjo idea that we incorporated in a popish tune. Sort of Beatles. Sort of the Monkees! |
CD: Which Planet Next?

Story Behind the Song
Thomas is a choir buddy of mine. An unbelievable (bass) singer from an unbelievable family of singers and musicians. He 'claims' to have just picked up the banjo and started teaching himself, although his level of playing says otherwise. (I mean for a guy who says he can't read music, his expertise is a marvel to witness.)
Anyway, he came by the studio one night for beers and to toss around some musical ideas and he started playing this simple chordal passage that I heard as a verse to a song. To me it was something reminiscent of a Lennon or McCartney thing. I immediately fell in love with it and promised to build an arrangement around it. You can still hear Thomas' original banjo tracks in verses two and three.
When asked what type of lyrical idea he had in mind he drew a blank but said he thought something with 'LAZY' in it. I came up with Lazy Boy Blue as it seemed to sing well. I was also fooling around with the idea of 'When Forever Comes', so the two lyrical ideas just magically meshed. In fact the real title of the song is: 'When Forever Comes (The Tale of Lazy Boy Blue)'.
Lyrics
Got to get back to the straight and narrow
Got no time for your Dracula Kiss
Im drinkin cappuccino with Mia Farrow
And boy it dont get better than this
Lazy Boy Blue off to college went
Everybody said that boy aint got a clue
Who put all those things in his head (hey dad its evident)
So dont you cry Mama, one less tater for the stew
To Lazy Boy Blue life is like a traffic wreck
Father Tim looks baffled, that boy dont even try
Another lost delinquent, another hit and run
But dont you worry Mama your Blues got an alibi
And dont the Good Book say if you aint got the facts
Better know how to spin a lie!
Got to get back to the straight and narrow
Got no time for your Dracula Kiss
Im drinkin cappuccino with Mia Farrow
And boy it dont get better than this
Its Alpha and Omega with me in the middle
A little Armageddon and a touch of rum
Said Lazy Boy Blue to Chicken Little
Where you gonna be When Forever Comes
Where you gonna be when forever comes
Where you gonna be, old boy
Where you gonna be when forever comes
Where you gonna be, old boy
Lazy Boy Blue found himself a debutante
A Yankee girl with a Boston drawl and sway
Went up to the Cape on the 4th of July to meet her family
Forgot to salute the flag, made an awful fuss
And Mama will that boy be the death of us!
Better get back to the straight and narrow
Got no time for your Dracula Kiss
Im drinkin cappuccino with Mia Farrow
And boy it dont get better than this
Its Alpha and Omega with me in the middle
A little Armageddon and a touch of rum
Said Lazy Boy Blue to Mister Chicken Little
Where you gonna be When Forever Comes
Saints alive and saints be praised someday that boy will be the president
Just needs a little to tie him over and the landlord wants the rent
The stock report is dismal, his portfolios a mess
So to all ye kings and merciful judges this has been a test!
Got to get back to the straight and narrow
Got no time for your Dracula Kiss
Im drinkin cappuccino with Mia Farrow
And Woody Allen sure looks pissed!
In my Alpha Romeo hey Im Mario Andreetti
Mamas apple pie gonna share me some
With that cute blonde sittin in the backseat with the fiddle
Thats where Ill be When Forever Comes
Where you gonna be when forever comes
Where you gonna be, old boy
Where you gonna be when forever comes
Where you gonna be, old boy
Got to get back
Got no time
Im drinkin cappuccino
And boy it dont get better than this…
