    Story Behind the Song
Dirts favorite Line(s): ‘Remember when the Rabbi broke the bread and the fish’, ‘cause of His affliction we come to be healed from within’, ‘Manna became man!’

Christ was actually supposed to be on the PLAGUE album. At least it was an idea way back then. The reason it didn’t make it was because I had heard a lot of songs about Jesus that were cool but a little cheesy. I had very specific ideas for mine. I wanted it to be full of theology but still fun to listen to. I wanted it to be ‘preachy’ but not condemning. These were all hard to ball up together into one since, in most cases, they seem to mix like oil and water. I wasn’t mature enough in the PLAGUE days to accomplish the task so I decided to keep gathering ideas until I felt I could construct something that would pass the grade.

In retrospect I am glad that it turned out that way because 3 years later, as I started to work on A WAR TO RESTORE, this song fit right into the program. I was designing the first portion of the album to be a concept. I wanted to take the listener through occurrences in my life in procession. I had fell into a deep depression in 96-99. There were a lot of reasons behind it but the main one was that I had forgotten my first love. The ‘Blunted Edge’ song came about out of all the questions I had concerning that slump, but this track was a production of the answer. There was a night in particular when, all of a sudden, I realized that so much time had been wasted focusing on negative things instead of the good.

That’s what this track represents in the concept I wanted to get across on this album. ‘Blunted Edge’ was the stress and pain of depression, to which at the end there was a ‘release’ (‘Go ahead and take everything I want you too!’) caused by the realization that I had lost focus on God. So in my life I was sent through circumstances that allowed me to be able to write these two songs (I see them as one) out of experience. If I had tried to push this song onto the first album it would have resulted in another half stepped attempt to relay a personal Gospel to others.

There was an Afu Ra remix on his album (‘Whirlwind Through Cities’?) where DJ premier sampled a cut from a Portishead song called ‘Uncertainty’. But Premier chopped it turning the original sample into a recognizable but not identical loop. I always loved the Afu beat because it was such a raw example of Premiers prowess. So, in the ol’ spirit of hiphop, I ‘borrowed’ his already borrowed idea (who knows, maybe Portishead borrowed it from something else!). So basically Portishead played the original live, Premier jacked it and cut it up as a sample, then I had a live band play Premiers cut up version. I always thought it was funny how it went from a live band, to a cut up sample, back down to a live band playing the cut up sample. The piece at the end is from a Fiona Apple song called ‘Criminal’ that I also borrowed in the hopes that I would never get sued.

This track and ‘Blunted edge’ have had the most tremendous impact with my fans more than any other songs. I had decided long ago to be a revealing and honest person, especially in my songs. But the transparency I relayed in these two tracks opened the door for many people to honest about their own personal struggles, especially with God. I would have to say that if I could only have one of my songs and all others would vanish, I would pick ‘Blunted Edge’ but there would be no blunted edge without ‘Christ’ resharpening the blade.

    Lyrics
    "Christ"

    HALLOWD BE THY NAME
    FATHER SENT SON TO ACCOMPLISH
    THE WORK OF REDEMPTION
SON SENT SPIRIT TO BRING CONVICTION
AND TO APPLY TO MEN WHAT CHRIST HAD ACCOMPLISHED
REMEMBER WHEN THE RABBI BROKE THE BREAD AND THE FISH
TO FEED THE MULTITUDES OF THOUSANDS
    PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS
    AND CRUSHED FOR OUR INIQIUTIES
IN THIS- THE PUNISHMENT THAT BROUGHT PEACE WAS WITH HIM!
‘CUASE OF HIS AFFLICTION, WE COME TO BE HEALED FROM WITHIN’ (Isaiah 53:5)
ABRAHAMS SON!, CHOSEN ONE, ZIONS CORNERSTONE
PASSOVER, SON OF MAN SEATED ON GOLD THRONE
    HIS BIRTH SUPERNATURAL
    MANNA BECAME MAN!
ETERNITY CAME INTO TIME, SO THAT WE COULD UNDERSTAND
    THE DIVINE PLAN
    OF THE AGES
    OLD TESTAMINT, TURN THE PAGES
    THE PROPHETS FORCASTED
AND EVERYONE CAME TO PASS, KID!
    FULFILLED WITH HISTORIC EVIDENCE
    HIS DIETY ESTABLISHED
    THE WORD BECAME FLESH
    THE MIGHTY I AM!
    THE CONQUERING LION!
    THE SUFFERING LAMB
    THE NAILS IN HIS HANDS
    THE PRICELESS SACRIFICE
    THE HONEY ON MY LIPS
    THE FELLOWSHIP
THE WAY THAT I FALL OFF THE HORSE, AND LEARN FROM
THE WAY THAT HE COME WITH:

    (Chorus)
    WATER TO MY SOUL!

    BECAUSE WHAT I NEED
    IS A GOOD DEFENSE
CAUSE I’M FEELIN LIKE A CRIMINAL
AND I NEED TO BE REDEEMED
TO THE ONE I’VE SINNED AGAINST
BECAUSE HE’S ALL I EVER KNEW OF LOVE
