The 'devil' is about a haunting, but not at all sinister, in fact there are three possibilities of who the speaker might be, and many possibilities of the meaning of the phrase "the devil is in the grey" Most people don't notice that the voice is speaking a warning. The word 'devil' is used metaphorically. Most hear the word 'devil' and assume he is the speaker ... but au contraire ... that is not what this writer had in mind. |

Story Behind the Song
While listening to a conversation in Canada, I heard someone speak the words 'the devil is in the grey' I quite liked the sound of this conversation fragment and adapted it to a song idea that came to me when spending time in a friends flat in London England. By night a room in her flat took on a magical ambience, setting the stage for 'the Devil is in the grey'
Lyrics
Devil
Last night I heard it again
It came in through the window like the sun and the wind
I'm not insane, even the cat heard
It was loud and clear, it spoke words
It said
The Devil is in the grey
I don't know why he does it
I guess he likes it that way
A light kiss as cold as the rain
Dressed in shadows
Come to greet me again
I'm not insane, even the cat heard
It was loud and clear, it spoke words
He said
The Devil is in the grey
I don't know why I do it
I guess I like it this way
