Story Behind the Song
This song was written after my friend, a known addict who I'd watched doing drugs, died from his habit. It's a horrible thing to wonder whether I helped kill him by not trying to stop him when he used in front of me, and this song reflects this anguish.
Lyrics
Father I've got a confession to make
I killed a man today
I didn't stop him from lighting the flame
I didn't take the needles away
I killed a man today
I killed a man today
Father please help me you don't understand
I didn't mean to stray
Father I offer the blood on my hands
I saw the lines but I made no demands
I killed a man today
I killed a man today
And in the dark a voice is crying out to heaven (hear the cry)
Tell me you can hear it crying out to heaven (in the night)
I wish that I could see him flying up to heaven (hear the cry)
Die and go to heaven (say goodbye)
Set me free, set me free
Father forgive me I know what I've done
Now I'm prepared to pay
One of your children has faded away
I just looked on and had nothing to say
I killed a man today
I killed a man today
And in the dark a voice is crying out to heaven (hear the cry)
Tell me you can hear it crying out to heaven (in the night)
I wish that I could see him flying up to heaven (hear the cry)
Die and go to heaven (say goodbye)
Set me free, set me free
And in the dark a voice is crying out to heaven (hear the cry)
Tell me you can hear it crying out to heaven (in the night)
I wish that I could see him flying up to heaven (hear the cry)
Die and go to heaven (say goodbye)
Set me free, set me free
Father I've got a confession to make
I killed a man today
I didn't stop him from lighting the flame
I didn't take the needles away
I killed a man today
I killed a man today
