This tune was inspired by jazz artist Chick Corea "Spain." Almost a soundtrack on to itself it features the GR50 Roland Guitar Synthesizer and Proteus synth module. |

Story Behind the Song
This tunes prominently features me on Roland GR50 Guitar Synthesizer and a layered Proteus synthesizer module. Both synth module are 90's technology and it takes quite a bit of getting used to. The guitar tracking from analog to digital still needs a lot to be desirable on these units. Many times I have to alter my playing style to accomodate the sound it produces. In this case, when I played my solo, I had to play the notes down stroke, otherwise the synth would squeal or cut off. If you listen closely at the end of the solo, my attempt to play up and down stroke met with a few nanosecond of clipping (musical notes not completely finishing to its tail end.) I left it that way since I have a strong attitude that quantizing and fixing tracks to sound polish feels unnatural. Maybe if it was a Pop song then I would have to reconsider. The synth parts were all played live. They were not overdubbed. In fact the only guitar overdub was during the main melody sections.
Factor X is just a play on words. I turned the most often used X-Factor around and placed the "X" upfront. You bio-chemist out there are probably thinking of some deficient coagulated blood sample :-). Factor X is a soundtrack-type piece with a Phrygian (almost Spanish) mode. Given the intricacy of playing the clave with my American musicians, we manage somehow to capture some of its element. So, imagine a Latin Orchestra (Conjunto) but with an electric/synth quartet at full force.
