	Story Behind the Song I had an opportunity to direct a production of Hamlet last fall (2002). In order to set the mood and highlight the action, some music seemed appropriate. I have often prepared music for plays and various kinds of presentations, but for this great play, something really special seemed to cause the music to just pour out. Some of the pieces seemed to have a life of their own: I would begin writing something for one soliloquy or scene change, and by the time I finished, it seemed destined for an entirely different point in the play. The Overture was the most time consuming, but it seemed to "prepare" the audience nicely for the opening. With the final note, with its monstrous "clang", people often jumped.
