Story Behind the Song
"I wrote this song in the studio, which is a rare occurrance for me. It's a story that happened amidst all the other stories on the album, but I hadn't yet found a song to fit it by the time the recording phase came about. Well, it was one of those stories that floated around in my head for a bit and probably took a full eight years to just write it and get it out. There was no way I was going to release part one without it.
As You Are took about a take apeice for all the guitar parts; Leila rushed in straight from work and had a few sessions warm-up before the cello take sounded like something we wanted to keep. Really, and I tell her this, the cello peice really makes the song, and in many ways I went back during the mastering process and scrapped anything -- including lyrics -- that conflicted with the cello part. I wanted this dry, seventeenth century nostalgia that called up the image of a lone cellist in a piano room with huge windows, sunlight ... wooden floors and old piano stands ... this cello sound, I felt, really created the offbeat, thoughtful feeling I was really going for in this song ..."

Lyrics And Music By Julian Rai

V I
With the highway lights making shadows on your face;
I look over at you as you quickly turn away.
The silence was its own mistake.
V II
We landed and we ate beside the car;
Then you stood by the waterside, egging me on.
Luv, our time was a passing one.
V III
You peeled down to your underwear and bra;
And then you dove in the water, slipped the others off.
I said 'I don't have a suit', you said 'go as you are'.
V IV
Your mother's choice for college, no surprise;
Your confident demeanor, a disguise.
You've got a thousand expectations that are shaped like your life.
CH
We were connecting every little star ...
I recall you brushed against me in the dark ...
Then shivering back to the car ...
I think I'd rather leave you as you are.
V V
We planned to get together later on;
I apologize -- like I said, I couldn't come.
I've looked everywhere, but I don't see you around ...
