Story Behind the Song
Lyrics written years ago, and then set to music the day after watching a Tom Waits concert. The first version was sung gruffly in the Waits style. The second version was smooth, in my natural voice. The third was hiring a pro (Melanie Joy Hall) to sing it beautifully.
Lyrics
Dying Too Long
Gonna break down and live real soon, been dying much too long,
Gonna open my eyes, step outside, and write a brand new song.
It's not that I don't want to see the things I've always seen,
Just want to be part of the places that I’ve never been.
Dreams? They are worth living, if everybody else would go along,
No one will follow yours, you've got to see things in the sun,
People break their necks and hearts to try to rake in gold,
And when they die no wiser, they just cry that they weren't told.
So I'm opening the door, not trying anymore,
Nothing left to hope for, 'cause it's all here in my hand.
Open up the door, not keeping score no more,
Walk out on the solid earth, let others sift the sand.
Dollar bills just fly away, they don't buy a cloud of dust,
The prettiest pink Cadillac will crumble in red rust,
Careers and cash and all the things that people think they need,
Are not as dear as open eyes, I’ll follow where they lead.
