Story Behind the Song
One of the (relatively) lyrically deeper songs of the early days, Living Dead talks about living for something more than what most people in the world do. Originally the horns were supposed to play the beats opposite the guitar in the spaces between verse & chorus, but when we got into the studio, things got messy and we just couldn't get it right, so they ended up playing on the same beats. Another fun fact about the "Skank You Very Much" recording sessions is that, although CJ was our bass player at the time, he doesn't appear on any of the songs because he decided to go to a movie with some girls the afternoon we were recording (YES, we did the whole thing in one afternoon) so Tim (our then drummer) stepped in and played bass on the songs that Elvis (tenor sax) wasn't already taking over. Elvis became our full-time bass player sometime later, but this is one of the songs Tim plays bass on.
Lyrics
Here I go again, another dreary day to bore me back to sleep. Have some little chats with people, superficial, they don't get too deep. Then I step back from myself and look at what I am... how in the world did I become another one of them? They get up every morning, put on the same suit, they're the living dead and they're looking to recruit. So if you've got no purpose, nothing to live for, just put on your suit and tie and march right out the door. Will this ever end, the constant cycle boring me to death? Working to make money just to make me more depressed. Then I step back from myself and look at what I am... forget it, I won't do it, no I won't be one of them. They get up every morning, put on the same suit, they're the living dead and they're looking to recruit. Jesus gives me purpose, something to live for. Now I'm not living dead, no, not anymore.
