    Story Behind the Song
This is an introspective song i wrote when visiting John Steinbeck's home turf--though it's not at all about migrant workers. It is about the impossibility of hiding the truth: said truth being that I totally dig you, baby. I wrote most of it--as the song says--while sitting in a motel after watching some surfers on the beach near monterrey. The funny thing is initially I was talking to my mom in the song--but these things always dissolve into what i'm really THINKING about. As all my recordings, this one's a bit rough, but it wants to be your friend.

    Lyrics
sittin in a motel in salinas, california
wonderin what i would say to you
if you found out about all that i been keeping from you
hiding in the spaces between my ears

well i told the sea this afternoon
said it's keep my secret for at least a hundred years
and we'll be dead by then, but i can't wait
you can see it in the way that i look up when i play
    i give it to you

probably you've suspected, maybe once or twice
caught my shadow lurking round yer porch
it's lucky we have both got an alibi
it's easy to pretend nobody's thinkin bout nobody

what did i tell the sea this afternnon
you won't be told til my blood's gotten cold
and it's safe like that, but i can't wait
you can see it in the way i watch you misbehave
    i give it to you

california brings out the stranger things
i can't tell if you know cause i don't know if you would tell
floatin like an albatross on pigeon wings
    just a little bit unsteady

only went to see old steinbeck
we all have to catch some waves
play our guitars like stars on the beach
i told you i'm not tellin you
you're callin me on the phone
i wish i could get to la by friday

    i'd give it to you
