Story Behind the Song
I wrote this in early 2002 as I reflected over the loss of my mother when I was growing up. While loosely based upon real life, I was trying to paint a picture from multiple views.
Lyrics
Dusty roads and burned out fields, and no one had a lot
In the summer of '83 the sun burned hot
Dirty dishes, forgotten chores, facts that slipped her mind
He couldn't tell quite so well and he never had the time
Rain came down
And then the rain came down, down, down
Scare and lonely when the fog rolled in, she prayed that it would clear
Hospitals and one-way rides, she never reappeared
He drove that night through the blinding rain, they had to let him go
Lost inside, lightning flashed, he never felt the blow
Rain came down
And then the rain came down, down, down, down, down
Everyone 'll get what’s coming too them, some will get too much
Me I'm waiting for my turn
Everyone in the little town knew, they didn’t know what to say
They tried to smile in church that day, everybody's lost their share
Riding home the Common was dark, the path it was well worn
All the houses were buttoned up, waiting on another storm
Rain came down
And then the rain came down, down, down, down, down
