In terms of general worldview, this song represents the absolute pinnacle of Jon`s pop-philosophy, which is, to date, still rather feeble & wet-behind-the-ears. Admittedly, the hooks are sugary, and the melodies sweet, but only in so much as the over-arching lyrical theme is debauched beyond compare. |

Story Behind the Song

Jon James
American Dream (Television)
Q: What was the motivation for the song?
A: You know that Sinead O’Connor album, I Do Not Want What I Cannot Have? I think my motivation was more, I Do Not Want What I Do Not Want.
Q: What do the lyrics mean?
A: Television is the new Opiate of the Masses.
Q: Where was the song written?
A: Initially? In my head. My old band, King Size, used to always close the set with it, so we kind of cut our teeth onstage with this one.
Q: How long did it take to write?
A: Lyrically, almost instantly on the verses. No re-writes there. I did completely re-vamp the chorus lyrics & melody at the last minute, though; to the song’s overall benefit, I think.
Q: How long to record? How many takes?
A: Basic tracking was fast & furious. In terms of track layout and overall arrangement, this song virtually mixed itself, too. Quickest mix on the record. We cut that guitar breakdown near the end about a dozen times, though. Couldn`t get happy with the guitar tone. Used different mics, different guitars, different amps. Still don`t like it. Sounds like Rick Springfield. And the crazy ending? Noah was about ready to kick me in the nuts by the time we`d actually gotten a solid take. He needed a cigarette pretty badly (coincidentally, he came back afterwards and nailed What Goes On? on the second take).
Lyrics
AMERICAN DREAM (TELEVISION) [4:00]
Freaked out, ya bought the corporate dream
Precious and young
Free fall, bashed your head on the screen
Television
Blind date with the heroin chic sexy skeletons
Free love on the big city scene
Because you got down the new religion, mama
It`s the American Dream, now, mama
Television
Bells ring, drag your ass outta bed
Precious and young
Smoke this just to wake up your head
Mental medicine
You gotta dress all the part, gotta walk like the dead
Fashion
Revolution of tarts takin` over my bed
Ya tried breakin` out
Ya tried breakin` down
Teary-eyed angel
Breathe, love, let’s settle down
