A comparatively sweet (for Mr. James, that is) song about cheap champagne receptions, latex fetishes and hopeless Hollywood infatuation. |

Story Behind the Song

(So Far) Off Broadway
Q: What was the motivation for the song?
A: It hit me one day that certain people I once found sexy are actually quite tedious; especially the star-struck.
Q: What do the lyrics mean?
A: Last time I checked, little more than incoherent rambling; but they rhyme pretty well, don’t they?
Q: Where was the song written?
A: In numerous notebooks, until it finally reached its current form.
Q: How long did it take to write?
A: This song evolved over the period of two bands. It was originally in the key of E, and sounded something like STP with a limp. The old title? Suburban Dirty Girl.
Q: How long to record? How many takes?
A: Well, there was a lot of, um, experimentation with this song. Brynn Arens from FLIPP helped do some of the pre-production (thanks also to Kilo Bale, for the inspiration). We did the first drum take in a huge, cavernous hallway outside of the actual studio. It literally took hours to extend all the cables & mics out there, set it all up and get tones. Since I’d already done some programming/sequencing, I tried to pull off the live drumming, but it became evident rather quickly that I can’t play for shit. Brynn ended up sitting in and, when all was said and done, the tune sounded like an Aerosmith power ballad bashed out in a high school gymnasium. It took us, like, 12 hours to get the drum track. Stellar, man. I ended up ditching it and re-cutting it with Noah. But we did get some cool AM Radio vocals through a Coleco toy CB mic, and I really dig the outro, which sort of reminds me of George Harrison sitting in with Led Zep. Special thanks to D.B. for the woozy slide playing.
Lyrics
(SO FAR) OFF BROADWAY [4:20]
Cinderella girl
She dream about Hollywood
Flimsy tinsel town
Big party underground
Since she was 16
A bona fide bottle blonde
Opened all the stops
Pulled on her rubber gown
You`re so far off Broadway
Everyday, boring day Broadway
I think I heard her scowl,
All the princes are vagabonds
Kicked her pretty heels
And pushed `em to the ground
Starry-eyed and free
She beat all my rhythm down
Kitten in a cage
I dream I`m gagged and bound
Ya know you look like I should feel
They say you gotta dream to make it real
Every day I wanna beat the doldrums down
But every Cinderella story makes me wanna drown
Belladonna blue
She painted up like a clown
Princess of the ball
Merry-go-round and round
