    Story Behind the Song
This song dates back to about two years ago, when I came up with a riff/finger exercise which is now the opening riff of the piano solo in Days Gone By (we'll just call it DGB from now on). We had jammed around that riff before, and came up with an intro and main progression, but we ditched the song because Alex thought it sounded too much like "Baba O'Riley" by the Who. I stumbled upon what would become the opening riff for the song in December, and I played it for Alex and Drew right before going to a Slip show. After the show, we all were in the mood to write, so we combined the new riff with the old and the song was born. I wrote the lyrics in one shot, never revised 'em.. I kind of wish I had, but I hate changing lyrics after I've sung them a couple times, it just feels odd. We changed the key of the song from B-flat to F after we realized how much better it sounded there. The high note on "high" was added while recording, after Will realized he could sing falsetto better than he could sing normally. The harmonica was added after recording for a different texture at the end, and we can't really pull if off live, until I get one of those Bob Dylan-style gizmos that attaches a harmonica to your head. The left-right panning of the guitar under the piano solo (a la "What is and What Should Never Be, by Led Zeppelin) was also added after recording by turning some knobs. We're real knobheads, just so you know.

DGB was fun to record - really quick too. It took us about 6-7 hours of solid time to record a bunch of takes and mix them and all that. And we didn't know shit about effects or miking when we recorded this either, so it would probably be even faster today.

I guess we were hoping this would kind of be a party song, like "Sweet Home Alabama" or some such thing; something where you just turned it on and turned it up, and it felt good. However, it comes across kind of unpolished... and the sound isn't rich, because we didn't do any overdubs, really, except for a couple guitars, but they don't fill the sound up much. So, as a party song, this could probably be better. As a recording though.. when you take each instrument on its own... I think we did pretty well.

I really hope everyone who listens to this song likes it! Thank you!

    Lyrics
It's been so long since I've been here
And my hair's grown long in these past few years
It feels so different when I come near
The walkway that leads to the door of my home
But who's to say what's mine anymore?
It's all in your mind and I find I'm the core
Of my own situation, I'm pacing the floor
Of the life that I used to live

    (Chorus)
And I remember the days gone by
And I remember the tears you cried
When I left town it was suicide
But I'm coming back to stay

I remember running through the fields
And staring up into the swirling sky
Just watching the stars pierce through the clouds
    Feeling so incredibly high

And I remember the days gone by
And I remember the nights we would lie
Under the trees watching the headlights stream by (hehe.. funny story behind this one, ask me about it sometime)
I don't know what else I can say to you tonight so...

    (Repeat Chorus)
