Story Behind the Song
The motivation for writing this song was that my band needed original songs and somebody had to do it. The lyrics are self-explanatory: a bunch of hipsters like to stay out late, club hop and dance to swing music. I wrote the song on my couch in the summer of 1999 and it took maybe 5 hours to complete (although not in one sitting). We did maybe five or six takes in the studio in Sept. 2002. This piece swings hard!
Lyrics
They are lizards, loungin' lizards
Baby, ain't got no place to be
They like a mambo or three-piece combo
And a cocktail at quarter-to-three
They are nighthawks wearing pink socks
When the rest of the town is in bed
A winkin' hi now, give you the eye; wow!
As that rhythm goes to your head
Chorus:
They are cool and swingin,' wild but devine
Lazy, crazy, singin,' hip and on time
Bluesters, redsters, don't-want-to-go-to-bedsters
Wacky, lucky Cuban-puffin' funsters: they are the onesters
Give me a tonic and a lime...
I'd like to be in that Swing Society
I'd like to be in that Swing Society
I'd like to be in that Swing Society
I'd like to be in that Swing Society
Some go cattin' a mad top-hattin'
They're the scene, they're the bomb, the hubbub
They go a skippin' a bop-hop-hippin'
From club to club to hot club
Shag and East Coast, Lindy, West Coast
Swingin' out, swingin' fast, swingin' high
Until it's dawn and the lights go on,
They'll be dancin' 'til it's time to fly
(Repeat full chorus)
(Repeat 1st half chorus)
Give me a tonic, a lemon, an olive, an onion, a cherry... and a lime!
(Repeat 2nd half chorus)
