Story Behind the Song
Even though usually my music doesn´t intentionally try to be narrative, this song could be an exception. It was originally intended for a documentary about the "fragas do Eume", that´s to say the forest surrounding the river Eume, one of the most beautiful green spaces in Galicia. By that time I was trying to move forward in my research for new ways of conveying sonic landscapes, and in fact the beginning of this song, along with the end of "060202", could be considered the origin of the "Poms" that I have made afterwards in Paris. This beginning was created by layering various similar sounds in order to obtain a thick layer, to what I added the "throwing pebbles in a pond" sound. The result sounded very aquatic to me, so I decided to develop that feeling. In brief, the music tells a story which begins with some children playing near a pond, one of them falling in the water by accident. Surprisingly enough, he discovers that he can breath under the water and he dives until he finds the gates to the ruins of a lost sunken city (1´17´´). For sometime he wanders in this place until he suddenly realizes how tired he is... he starts to feel asleep, but then he sees what seem to be... mermaids? *blink* he suddenly closes his eyes at 4´47´´. When he awakens, he is with the mermaids, who take him with them to a spaceship: it then departs at a very high speed, going out of the sea and the earth into space. Finallym they reach the "mermaids" homeplanet, which he sees for a while, but then he realizes he can´t stay there and asks to return back home. Another travel starts... and the child awakens back in the forest, unsure if he had a dream and even a dream inside a dream...
- This is the story so far. I didn´t make it up, however, until I finished the song, but in a way or other it had been there from the beginning.
I´ve had half of the song made since last year and I got some times over it without achieving any satisfactory results. Finally, by the end of june 2003 I was shown the first preview of the documentary by my dear friend Marcos Caruncho, and I was so impressed by the beautiness of his montage that I decided that it was time to finish the song, which I did that same day. The final three minutes of the song are quite different from the rest, a sort of "reprise" or a song within a song, corresponding to the idea of a dream within a dream.
