Story Behind the Song
The 4th part in the GODS OF FOREVER storyline. Here, the immortal mercenary reminisces about his keep along the Black Sea. He also remembered how cruel and fearless he was with his people. In the end, he plans for battle against invading Turk hordes from the south. Instead, his neighboring allies plot to overthrow him. It concludes with a blood-stained battlefield. Snow turned red. Bodies strewn across fields. Only himself left after the bloody ordeal, without a kingdom, a people, or a home. The song's composition complemented the main part of the story complete with battle-sounding parts.
Lyrics
WINTER IN THE LAND OF HOPELESSNESS
(Downey)
In my kingdom, I rule on high
o’er the lands that I survey
passed the mountains, by the Black Sea
land I’ve made my monarchy known
held my throne through blood and fear
these peasants will know who runs their lives
“Die with me!” is my decree
the people will learn how to live and die
neighboring kingdoms plot against me
now I prepare for war
the battle rages on
heaven watch this gathering
witness these nations quick defeat
as they wage with swords drawn, they’re calling
a thousand men on every side
await the signal to start their ride
from their soul, they gather their strength and
scream aloud!
from their rage, the blood is spilled
madman’s hunger never fulfilled
in a rage I swing at every soldier
screams are heard throughout the hills
women raped and children killed
everyone will know that I cannot be slain
die with me my brothers, fight onward
show no mercy
victory is at hand
I’m first to charge and last to stand
Ride!
as the smoke clears I now see
atop a pile of human debris
the frost settles on this wasteland
no crown, no glory, no land
now I must leave
