This is it. The most controversial poem I've ever written. It wasn't supposed to be that way. It was supposed to be a humorous dissection of racism in America, something we can all get behind. Things don't always turn out how you want. |

Story Behind the Song
Ah. This poem was thought up in the dairy section of the Fry's Supermarket at the corner of Southern and Rural in Tempe, AZ. I saw the grinning Sugar Bear staring at me from the box. I picked it up, and on the back there was one of those maze games - something like "Get the Sugar Bear to Granny Goodwitch's house". She's there - terrified, barricaded in some sort of superfortress of a house because the Sugar Bear is trying to break in and steal her cereal.
It fell into place.
This was recorded in Albuquerque, NM at the R & B Club on Beer and Poetry Night. The piece was NOT well received. I knew that going in, and felt the need to twist the knife just a little more so.
The piece is a little rushed, I think. Might be because I heard the noises of knives being sharpened.
The end applause is from the Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Celebration. This replaces the angry silence at that happened in Albuquerque.
