Story Behind the Song
This is not actually even a real song at all. "Funk Rats" was simply a recent experimental studio test track. Much in the same way that "Symphony In Asis Minor" had originally begun back in June 1992. Both had been created only to check out new studios that had been built. From the beginning, there was never any serious attempt made to produce a released final take.
But the ASIA MINOR SESSIONS eventually turned into something else altogether, an album. Receiving an insanely wide variety of overdubbing sessions and what ended up being numberous remixing sessions. Recording dragged on endlessly for over 10 months and the remixing just kept on coming and going. Yet another new remix made for the Cardiology project eventually peaked at #5 on of all places, the Experimental Classical charts!
"Funk Rats" is different in that it was completed in just one very long non-stop session. This is more like what one might have expected from a basic test recording. Although this was not typical of the way that the Peyote Coyotes worked, it wasn't unheard of. There were a number of songs done very quickly. Many songs were done in just one or two takes. Although some of these "one take wonders" had actually taken a very long time to complete. A few songs were written and recorded in just one night. Other songs never seemed to be getting finished and literally years had been spent trying to get them to reasonable
satisfaction. This sometimes became a serious problem during the mix down stages.
What we have here is certainly not typical by any stretch of the imagination. It is not one of your standard run of the mill Peyote Coyotes recordings. Nothing about it seems even remotely familiar. It may be an indication of new styles and production techniques that the Coyotes may be using more of in the future. In fact for "Funk Rats", only a large number of individual tracks all pasted together in little pieces from different recordings during the session and the one completed take actually exists. Quickly recorded, heavily edited, mixed down and mastered in the new 128-track Studio #4 at 3:30 AM on January 23, 2003. This small studio was built in Mid July 2002 and designed mainly for digital mastering purposes. No recording sessions actually began to start taking place there until the "Unfinished Cachophony #2" sessions on Christmas Eve.
