Story Behind the Song
The words to this piece were dashed out during a lunch hour at Lewis and Clark College, inspired by Richard Brautigan's writing.
Lyrics
There were four of them. Two were on the left side and two of them were on the right. And they belonged to two separate people. Two people owned them. And each person owned a left one and a right one...That's how it was organized. Frequently the right ones would met, a sort of "How do you do?" But those left ones, well, those left ones would usually keep to themselves. They were very anti-social, those left ones.
Have you listened to anyone's hands lately? You know, some people's hands say a lot about their owners. I once heard some hands say "I'm 49 and was born in Duluth, Minnesota." Boy, that guy really tried to pull a fast one on me, but his hands gave him away. Would you want anyone to know that you were from Duluth? Once mine said "Boy, I sure am nervous" and they would not keep quiet. Even I could hear them. Not many people can hear their own hands.
You know how some people can't sing but think they can, and just keep on singing, and everybody hates it? Once, hands said, "We shall build castles, couches, cooking utensils and other grand things."
And they did.
