    Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song one day after walking my kids to school. It was early in the morning. I hadn't gotten my coffee yet. I was getting frustrated that my kids were going extremely slow to examine every little thing on the ground. At some point I realized, "what a grumpy old man I'm being... let 'em explore!" I recorded the song up in Alma Colorado over a weekend.

    Lyrics
I can't think for the life of me why grown up people just can't see
All the things that I can see down here
Maybe it's cause they're so tall. They just look over it all
And never take a glance down at their feet

I think they'd be surprised, all the things they would find
If they would just poke around at all
There's lily pads out on the pond, and lizards on the old stone wall
And lots of stuff living under logs

    And I say
    Look, Look! Can't you see?
    Everywhere there's little things.
If you just take the time they're hard to miss.

    Like ladybugs with spotted wings
And piles of crunchy Autumn leaves
What person could just pass up stuff like this?
Not a kid like me you can bet!

I like walking with my Dad, but sometimes he gets kinda mad
When I keep picking stuff up off the ground.
    There's always something catch my eye, I can't resist. I don't why.
He says, "Son that's trash! Put that right back down!"

But Dad there's a piece of string, and a little broken plastic ring
And a penny just full of one day's worth of luck
And a bottle cap, and a pencil too, and a piece of glass that's colored blue.
I could fill a treasure chest with all this stuff.

    And I say
    Look, Look! Can't you see?
    Everywhere there's little things.
If you just take the time they're hard to miss.

Like lightning bugs late in the night
And the last slice of lemon pie
What person could just pass up stuff like this?
Not a kid like me you can bet!

I'm always hearing people say, if they could get some luck someday
Maybe they could win the lottery.
I think there's lotsa lucky stuff.
You just gotta pick it up.
At least that's how it always seems to me.

Like sometimes when my Mom is baking, she makes a chocolate cake
And leaves a bowl of icing with a spoon
And one time in an old creek bed, I found an arrowhead
You may not believe me but it's true!

    And I say
    Look, Look! Can't you see?
    Everywhere there's little things.
If you just take the time they're hard to miss.

Like making my little sister laugh
And sitting in my Grandma's lap
What person could just pass up stuff like this?
Not a kid like me you can bet!

Friday night at my house, everybody's gathered ‘round
And apparently us kids make too much noise.
And the grown-ups in the kitchen must be talking something big
Cause they don't smile much and they use a quiet voice

    Guys don't be blue
All your friends are here with you
Come on out and play a game of tag
And my friend Alex, boy, he's showing off a brand new toy
And we all found a bird's nest in the back

    And I say
    Look, Look! Can't you see?
    Everywhere there's little things.
If you just take the time they're hard to miss.

    Like lollipops in a jar
Please, please, please can I just have one more
What person could just pass up stuff like this?
Not a kid like me you can bet!

I can't think for the life of me why grown up people just can't see
All the things that I can see down here
