Story Behind the Song
After recording West Bank Kids, I felt I could write enough material for a couple of songs, and it was also clear a more up beat song was needed. I've always loved the song Jump, and once a Jewish theme was decided upon it almost wrote itself. Also, at the time I was visiting a Synagogue ala bar-mitzvah.
If you've ever been...these lyrics could hit home pretty good.
The song was written over a few days in my 'spare' time, and since I don't have the exact voice for the tune, I decided should humor play a part, to downplay the in-exactness.
See West Bank Kids for more recording info, but I was three times as picky with this song. Filters, plug-ins all got a look-see to make this as good as possible in Sonar, and once again the Korg provided the base layers. A good 4 days worth of actual time in this effort.
Oh, for a recording studio...
Lyrics
Read
words adapted 2001
I get up, to read torah,
I’m not the best, not the smartest around.
And I know, Rebbi just how you feel,
You’ve got to guess where the vowels are to make the words real.
Oh can’t you see me standing here,
I’ve got the word on the tip of my tongue,
This isn’t that fun,
Oh, I’d sure like to run.
Chorus
Might as well read. Read!
Might as well read.
Go ahead and read. Read!
Go ahead and read.
Aaa-ohh, Rah-eeo, What is that?
Rebbi what’s that word?
You say I don't know, I won't know
until I take [Hebrew One]
Well can't you see me standing here,
Achin’ back, I’m a reading machine (yeah RIGHT!)
Can this be a dream, (Pretty PLEASE!)
Oh, I'd sure like to scream. (AAAAAHHHHH!)
Chorus
(but I) Might as well read. Read!
Go ahead, read.
(see I) Might as well read. Read!
Go ahead, read.
SOLO
Might as well read. Read!
Go ahead, read.
Get in there and read. Read!
Go ahead, read.
