Story Behind the Song
After the fall of the Alamo, Sam Houston ordered the burning of Gonzales in order
to deprive Santa Anna's army of any form of refuge or shelter as they advanced
to engage the Texians. As they were awakened from their sleep, women and
children, many who had lost their men at the battle of the Alamo, took part in
the Runaway Scrape, watching their homes go up in flames.
