A parody of an American war song - written by an Irish/American using a French penname. Beat that! To keep it from being gloomy, kick it out with a jig, to be sure. |

Story Behind the Song
I don't know if Patrick Gilmore had trouble publishing for being Irish. Silly, since his band was still known as Gilmore's Band. At any rate, he published "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" under the name Louis Lambert, in 1863.
Soon after, many Irish and Scottish writers took to parodying his song with anti-war lyrics. This is probably the best known.
