Story Behind the Song
drought song started as an observation about the climate, both meteorological and political; nfa seemed like the song that answers the questions raised by drought song, and burning woman seemed like a logical segue to that. Burning woman is a meditation on love, old age, sickness, and death. After writing it I ran across Gautama Buddha's "fire sermon," in which he says "the body, o monks, is burning."
and yes, drought song has echoes of "he's gone" and burning woman relates chordally to "sugar magnolia
Lyrics
DROUGHT SONG
When the forest’s gone, then the water goes
The willows die when the creek don’t flow
Thunder rolls, but the rain don’t fall
The country’s quiet, no birds call
Chor:
It’s gonna get dry, dry, dry, dry
It’s gonna get dry, dry, dry, dry
Flowers bloom, but the bees don’t buzz
Why is this so? Because, because
This world’s been bent to the ways of men
Something’s gonna give, it ain’t if but when
Chor.
I can’t tell you just what’s gonna be
But it’s gonna get tougher, just wait and see
Or better yet, don’t wait at all
Start listening for your inner call
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
And when you can, help out yourself
Chor.
Maybe this earth will be green again
Maybe we’ll learn to live as friends
Maybe we’ll just hit the wall
I think it’s way too close to call
Whatever happens, let it feed your soul
Work on your part, remember the whole
Chor 2x
nfa
let me tell you what i'm gonna do
i'm gonna give my love to you
i'm gonna love you night and day
love for real and not fade away
your love for me has got to be real
you're gonna know just how i feel
love for real and not fade away
my love is bigger than a cadillac
i try to show but you drive me back
love for real and not fade away
BURNING WOMAN
I love a woman she’s a burning woman
I’m gonna love her just as long as I can
And she loves me, my burning woman
She loves me, I’m her burning man
I love her body though her body’s burnin
I love her soul though it’s only passin’ through
I love her heart, love her heart that holds me
I love to hear her say “I love you”
Some days the heat just drives us crazy
Some days it’s a white-hot glow
We love to mingle in the heat of the moment
Catch a little fire and let it go
(break)
Some days the heat just drives us crazy
Some day it’ll all go cold
Dance in the fire, in the embers in the ashes
Dance the slowin’ rhythm of growin’ old
Bye, bye, bye, my burnin’ woman
We’re here together and we’re already gone
Bless your, bless your, heart for holdin’ me
Bless the fire that joins us and bless this song
Flesh gonna sag, gonna fold, gonna wrinkle
Flesh gonna melt in the twinkle of an eye
Bones gonna crumble, gonna burn down to ashes
Ashes gonna scatter in the wind, in the sky
