Story Behind the Song
There is no shortage of song-writing material in Alaska.
This song is about some funny characters from Yakutat, Alaska. They all have two things in common- scrounging (getting stuff without paying for it) and squatting (living somewhere without paying). They take these skills and transform them into art.
Lyrics
Wild Bill, Wild Bill, was searching for some gold in a death trap skiff.
The thing had holes, several holes, water poured through them every split second.
He sanded down the age-old rust and named the skiff Lazarus.
The thing could hardly even stay afloat, but it was his favorite boat.
The Beachcomber. The Beachcomber.
Willie, Willie, never paid for a days rent in his life.
All he had was a sleeping bag, a 12-guage shotgun and a knife.
He liked to hide out from the cops and drink from his still.
He moved into Wild Bills A-frame on the North side of the hill.
The Beachcomber. The Beachcomber.
Bridge:
Scrounging and squatting, living off the land.
Cooking some fresh fish, brought in by your own hand.
Hunting and gathering, never buying from the store.
Cutting and skinning the log to your front door.
The Beachcomber. The Beachcomber.
Dangerous Dave, had a house in a tree that he made.
It was 2 stories tall, all of it was hidden in the shade.
It was thoroughly constructed and heavily booby-trapped.
If there were uninvited guests they would never visit back.
The Beachcomber. The Beachcomber.
Russell, Russell, knew he couldnt live in the city anymore.
He saved his cash, he quit his job, he bought an assault riffle at the store.
He took 90 pounds of rice and suds and headed into the sticks,
with his assault riffle and extra banana clips.
The Beachcomber, the Beachcomber....
