Story Behind the Song
As a Broadcast Journalism major it occured to me that many of the actions we hate as a society are encouraged and even driven my media obsessiveness. Osama and Al-Queda wouldn't drive planes into our buildings if we didn't reward that behavior with publicity, giving them exactly what they want. Kids wouldn't go gunning down fellow students at Columbine if we didn't have the media there making them feel omnipotent in return and giving them the attention they want only in response to negative conduct.
This is also written in the midst of hurricane force media spin in the field of politics. For lust of money we have the papers and news stations playing on the ignorance of viewers/listeners that don't have the skills, attention or concern to check out facts for themself. And then there are the 'credible' writers making up headlines for their own amusement, misleading hundreds of thousands at whim.
I think the deliberate deception is criminal and should be treated as such. Shouldn't we value truth enough to demand it?
Lyrics
Let's all agree to read between the lines, and see what we must see...
One lie... I read one line - one lie on a panic filled page, in a poison filled rave.
We let these fools have such power their shouts heard each hour on the hour.
On whose side are they this time?
These bought off by-lines...if there were justice this would be crime - I'd have them all doing time.
Cover it up in a landslide, no light of truth in the lamplight.
Always more sand to shovel, and how much deeper to dig...?
I read one line, one lie on a panic filled page in a poison filled rave. Cover it up in a landslide. No light of truth in the lamplight.
Always more sand to shovel, and how much deeper to dig...?
