"Bittersweet" shows a combination of a lot of our influences all rolled up into one song. You'll hear Zeppelin-inspired riffs, Floyd and Doors-like psychedelia, mixed with irate Alanis-Janis Joplin vocal power. Overall, this song has a 70's classic rock song feel. It's especially evident in the Sly Stone wah guitar part at the end of the verses. You'll know what I mean when you hear it.

    Story Behind the Song
"Bittersweet" is Nina's description for music and the business of making and selling music. The whole process is bittersweet. The sweetness comes from actually writing and recording songs and being proud of their creation. Especially when others around you like it. And I mean really like it because they com to your shows and request it. To perform a song you wrote yourself live and have people cheer at the end is one of the most satisfying things in the world to a musician and songwriter. Now for the bitter (!). The bitter side of the music biz is not being able to get through to radio unless you have a huge label behind you. Or having radio programmers who do play indie music but will only play their friends' bands. Or having A&R reps tell you they don't accept unsolicited material. Or worse, tell you that "Girl rock" isn't big on radio (hello? Have you heard of Alanis, Michelle Branch, No Doubt, Evanescence, etc?). "Bittersweet" is our anthem in response to an insulated and political music industry. We forge on independently and, though we may never compete with CD sales, we are making our mark on the live scene more so than bands with major label deals. The situation Sister Boombox finds ourselves in, in essence, is truly the definition of the song "Bittersweet".

    Lyrics
    BITTERSWEET

    I’M GONNA LET YOU KNOW
    WHAT’S REALLY ON MY MIND
I’M GONNA LET IT OUT, ALL THE BITTERNESS INSIDE
I’M NOT GONNA THROW AWAY WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT MY LIFE
CAN’T SHUT UP AND WALK AWAY
I’M NOT ONE TO DENY WHAT I FEEL
    HOPE YOU ENJOYED YOUR STAY
    COULDN’T MAKE IT MORE REAL
AND IF YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW WHERE THIS IS COMING FROM
    JUST LOOK AT MY FACE

    CHORUS
MY TIME, MY TIME IS COMING
    YEAH, MY TIME IS COMING

    ITS GONNA TAKE SOME TIME
    LET MY DEFENSES DOWN
    ITS GONNA BE JUST FINE
    I’LL FIND A WAY SOMEHOW
    LIFE GOES ON
    LIFE GOES ON WITHOUT YOU

    CHORUS

    LOOK AT MY FACE
I CANNOT ERASE THAT I’M AN ORDINARY GIRL
    I’M GONNA LET YOU KNOW
    I’M GONNA LET IT OUT

    CHORUS

    LOOK AT MY FACE
    I CANNOT ERASE THAT I’M...
    ITS GONNA TAKE SOME TIME
    ITS GONNA BE JUST FINE
