Story Behind the Song
Friendly Fire:
This song was inspired by an event that happened during the Gulf War. In one of the alliances’ ‘surgical hits’, as they called them, one of their smart bombs killed two soldiers from the alliance. This was admittedly a mistake,... a mystery. That night in the news, the president of the United States held a news conference and said that they had died in Friendly Fire. I remember the words tearing through me and wondering if the mothers of the dead soldiers were finding any comfort in those words. Then I thought of all the innocent civilians; the sons and daughters, mothers and fathers and so on who were dying in those targets...
The song is not attached to the Gulf war though; the words were carefully chosen to make the song timeless. Perhaps we have events in our not to distant future that will give the song strong meaning once again. I wrote this before 9/11.
Lyrics
Friendly Fire Marc “Marcus” Dupuis
Don’t worry, it’s only friendly fire
Don’t worry, no, don’t worry, it’s only friendly fire
In the flash of light, there will be no pain
When the roof caves in and your brother dies
When the walls fall in and your mother cries
It was only friendly fire…it’s only friendly fire… Don’t worry, it’s only friendly fire
All the soldiers in the trenches… They are wondering why
They are there in the trenches
Waiting for the call…of duty (Bis)
Waiting for the call for fighting in foreign places
Bombing sacred spaces
Erasing all those faces
Does anybody know what for
Don’t want to see another tragedy… Don’t want to see military ecstasy
Nobody wants a place, where, nobody wants to be
Let’s turn to inner space, change this reality
There’s a lot of money to be made at war…Let’s hope that’s not what it’s for
Does anybody really know what it’s for… ‘Cause all our friends and family
They’re wondering why…we are there, in the trenches
Waiting for the call, of duty (Bis)
Waiting for the call, for fighting in foreign places
Bombing sacred spaces… Erasing all those faces
Does anybody know what for, Does anybody know the score
Does anybody know the score …to this war… to this war…….
Outo is the same as intro.
