Story Behind the Song
This is another relationship song, sorta.
The first verse is about the feeling of new love, inspired by Tony and his car(his '63 Ford Falcon). I wrote this song in Golden Gate park one day in the freezing cold of a San Francisco summer.
And the chorus is about the harsh reality of falling in love too quickly.
There are two references to other songs in this song. The first song reference is about the surfers singing: "Up on the Sun" which of course is a great tune by the 'Meat Puppets'. The second song reference is about the homeless on Market Street singing: "Together Alone" which is a reference to a song and album by 'Crowded House'.
Lyrics
Leaving city streets for the open air
Down Geary Blvd with fog in our hair
Ocean Beach and surfers singing: "Up on the Sun"
In a '63 Ford Falcon lookin' for some fun
Our paths crossed on the 4th of July
We had our own fireworks inside
The mercury dropped and our tans faded 'way
You wanted to leave, I wanted to stay
Hey, Ho I didn't know
I held on tight when I should've let go
You didn't want me, you didn't and you never said so
It was only obvious
I didn't know
I didn't know
I didn't know
San Francisco in summer is a cold place to be
The sun shines on Mission but never on me
Market Street and homeless sing: "Together Alone"
And I don't hear the music waiting for your phone
Our paths crossed on the 4th of July
We had our own fireworks inside
The mercury dropped and our tans faded 'way
You wanted to leave, I wanted to stay
Hey, Ho I didn't know
I held on tight I should've let go
You didn't want me, you didn't and you never said so
It was only obvious
I didn't know
Hey, Ho I didn't know
I held on tight I should've let go
You didn't want me, you didn't and you never said so
It was only obvious
I didn't know
Hey, Ho I didn't know
Hey, Ho I didn't know
Hey, Ho I didn't know
Lyrics,
John Threet
