Story Behind the Song
The song was actually written in two stages. The verses were written in 1998 when I lived in Devon, England. They were inspired by a friend of mine who was a herion addict. He was a very talented guy but was in total denial that he had a problem and it was sad to watch him slipping into a hole. "Songs are running through my head", the opening line of the song, was something he said to me one day. I wrote it in a day or two based around conversations we would have, which always took the form of "give me a few weeks and I'll be back writing and stuff".
I then recorded a demo of it at home and left it sitting around for years.
Then when I moved to London, I started making the demos for my album Much To Discuss in a studio in Crystal Palace. I wrote the chorus in about 20 minutes. It's about relationships of course.
We recorded it in London at Music City in a day. Then when the main album sessions started in Cornwall, we re-recorded it faster and with more guitar. It was made in about five hours. I recorded the vocals at Subsream in London in two takes.
It's probably my favourite song.
Lyrics
Songs are running through my head
they nestle in my bed
my bed
ideas rushing through my viens
they wrestle with the chains
that are placed around me
but I do nothing with it
you were, are, my spirit
I think of it
She says it's fine, then says goodbye
the games my mind
I said tonight, don't say goodbye
you'll be alright
she says
Words that tumble through the air
I watch them unaware
they talk about me
places always are the same
I try to look away
but they still remind me
there's nothing to be said
the signs are showing red and i'm
still pasing time
She says it's fine then says goodbye
the games my mind
I said tonight, don't say goodbye
you'll be alright
she says
she says
but I do nothing with it
you were, are, my spirit
I think of it
She says
