Story Behind the Song
I wrote most of these lyrics years ago, however, the refrain, "I don't know, I don't know, I don't know why", came long after. During one of our live shows, we were improvising and that lyric came about. It seemed to fit and the song became complete.
The story is of one going from fear and loneliness to hope and comfort. We all have our lonely times, that's normal, this song just recognizes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You never need be without hope.
A short time ago I asked God to take away a type of depression that I wanted freedom from. It seemed to permeate my every thought and experience. I told Him that if He'd take it away, I'd tell people that He did so. He answered my prayer and so now I'm telling you. Of course, I still experience sadness in life, but the down times are not plagued by discouragment.
Lyrics
I remember sleeping in tear-soaked sheets
I dreaded the days
at night I would weep
the life of a sober, bumbling heap
in need of a rescue
of a dose of relief
Chorus:
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know why
it's all a mystery to me (repeat)
The making of easy
it's not so hard
you look to the sky and say,
"here, have my heart"
the making of easy
it's not so hard
you look to the sky and say,
"here, have my, here, have my heart"
(Chorus)
Now when I'm sleeping
in my bed
with the light turned out
and a pillow at my head
I reach for the heavens
I look to the sky
and I don't feel the tears
fallin' from my eyes
anymore...anymore
(oh, holy, holy, holy, holy One...)
all the love
all the grace
all the love
all the grace
won't You shine down on me
won't You wash right over me
won't You rain down on me
won't You wash all over, wash all over
wash all over me....
