Story Behind the Song
Sometimes it's easy to get lazy and to entertain oneself with the notion that something great can be achieved without effort. I remember being overwhelmed by the decisions that I was making, combined with a horrible case of writer's block, so I got in my car and drove all night from State College to Virginia Beach. I remember standing on the beach and seeing the star-filled sky, feeling insignificant, worthless, and tired of waiting. I later found that the rest of the band felt the same way. I wrote the lyrics over a year later, when the feeling came back.
Lyrics
Water at my feet
Inspiration on my mind
In the shadow of the harbor
Troubles eighty miles behind.
I'm just one star on the ground
Under millions in the sky.
As I'm sitting on the pier,
I see them all go sailing by.
My feet are nailed to the floor,
Think I'm looking at the sky
My friends all ask me "when?"
My family; "why?"
There's a stillness in the air,
I have only myself to blame
And the rest of us feel the same.
Feels like I'm
Holding my breath on a Sunday,
Waiting for my ticket to ride.
When it comes, I'll be running all the stoplights,
Wondering where to turn to,
And if my train breaks down tomorrow,
It'll only be because I never tried.
I can see myself in dreams,
A thousand miles from here
On the coast of California.
Memories and souvenirs.
I feel a total lack of motion,
Sitting dead without a breeze,
Has the Earth stopped spinning around
Or is it just me?
I'm really getting tired
Of this cold, hard town.
I've got a pocket full of change
And a head full of sound.
I'm sick of holding my breath on a Sunday...
