Story Behind the Song
Mr. Refund's Starry Sky was the title of a song without words that Fisher had written in late 1996. Jared had a song, written three years later about keeping a band together, that referred to Mr. Refund's Starry Sky, but didn't have a title. Fisher said he could use it.
This song was a late bloomer. In its skeletal form (consisting of the opening riff and basic chords) it had potential, but its potential wasn't realized until we were able to really put it under the microscope in the studio.
Lyrics
Eyes are open, kinda hazy
As evolution takes its toll.
And in the midst of Mr. Refund's Starry Sky,
We begin to lose control.
And in the mirror, things are different now.
It seems that our feathers floated out the door.
And I know that you can't outrun the horsemen,
And you can't outrun the real world anymore.
I've been trying to leave this place behind.
I'm sick and tired of trying.
But I've paid my price in innocence,
And I've got no time to reminisce,
But I've got to find some peace of mind
Before I try and let it all hang out.
And in the mirror, things are different now.
It seems that our minds are wounded and sore.
And I know that you can't outrun the horsemen,
And you can't outrun the real world anymore.
And in the midst of this big, neon borealis,
We've got ego trips and glory trains
Much to lose, not much to gain
One last chance to make our name.
But I've got to find some peace of mind
Before I try and let it all hang out.
