Story Behind the Song
The "melody of the Big Train" symbolizes something different for everyone, so I don't want to take that away from you. But I will say that, for those of you who heard it when it was first written (in 1996), it got a facelift from the acoustic version that you knew.
That's our good friend John Saunders on the background guitar. If you hear cool, inexplicable bends or floating guitar riffs throughout the song, that's him.
Lyrics
Looking at a picture and I crack a smile.
Listen to the sky fall down where I'm walking to.
Listen and I think of you, and I think of all that you're going through,
And I hope that it won't rain forever.
Oh, and I hope that the sun comes out when I'm there.
Unconditioned fingers on an old guitar.
It hurts like Hell, but there's nothing I'd rather do.
Strumming out a six-string tune, by the sound of which I've been consumed,
And I hope that it won't rain forever.
Oh, and I hope that the sun comes out when I'm there.
Have you ever heard the melody of the Big Train
As it rolls down the hillside in the storm?
Have you been left by those around you?
Did you ever just sit there and listen to the rain?
Notice nothing happens when we play alone.
I wonder if you think of us when you're humming the tunes that I wrote with you.
I'll meet you at the club downtown, and I'll stay there until the sun comes out,
And I hope that it won't rain forever.
Oh, and I hope that the sun comes out when I'm there.
